Bells of BurghleyPosted: April 8, 2013
There are two sides to my family. My fathers comfortable middle class family and my mothers solid working class side. My maternal Nana was in service before joining the Royal Air Force for the second world war. But I can’t imagine there were as many bells in the scullery where she served as there were on the walls of Burghley House. These bells attached to pull cords in rooms and hallways all over the house were used to summon the servants. The pendulums on the front of the bell arrangements kept on swinging after the sound had died away ensuring the staff knew exactly where service was required.
